Stars Shining Brightly

Stars shining brightly is happening in Roma. Roma is one of a number of communities involved in the One Million Stars to End Violence: Weaving Communities of Courage to End Violence project. The project is a peaceful global weaving project that encourages people to be the light and kindness they want to see in the world.

Maryann Talia Pau started One Million Stars to End Violence in 2012 as a personal response to the rape and murder of a young woman in her community. She was moved by people’s kindness and compassion in a time of community despair. She decided that the star was a perfect symbol to inspire light, hope, courage and solidarity.

In 2016, she partnered with the Queensland Government to create a one million star installation project as part of the Festival during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. An aspect of the vision of the Commonwealth Games Federation is to build peaceful and sustainable communities globally, and to enable those who cannot attend the Games to participate in the event.

The Queensland Government have also engaged Human Ventures to support individuals, groups and Star Weave Communities to make and send one millions stars and the Museum of Brisbane to design a spectacular one million star installation at City Hall in Brisbane.

AFLSSQ acknowledges Maryann Talia Pau and Janelle Burns, who lead the Star Weave Community in Roma. Heartfelt thanks to you – stars shining brightly, and best wishes to all those who continue to inspire our communities towards ending violence.
