Family Violence Prevention Legal  Services

FVPLS-AustraliaIndigenous FVPLS are Family Violence Prevention Legal Services that are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisations. FVPLS are unique, experienced and specialist service providers delivering culturally safe legal and non-legal services within which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is acknowledged and celebrated.

FVPLS provide legal assistance, casework, counselling and court support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children who are victim/survivors of family violence. Legal services are provided to victim/survivors in matters related to:

  • Family violence
  • Victims of crime compensation
  • Family law
  • Child protection.

FVPLS also provide an important community legal education and early intervention and prevention function. FVPLS have adopted a holistic wrap-around service delivery model that prioritises legal service delivery while recognising and addressing the multitude of interrelated issues that clients face. Nationally, 90% of FVPLS clients are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children.

FVPLS are expected to ensure that the services offered are culturally inclusive and accessible to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children in the specified service region, regardless of gender, sexual preference, family relationship, location, disability, literacy or language.

AFLSSQ is one of 14 FVPLS located in rural and remote locations around Australia. Our Office is located in Roma and we provide services across Southern Queensland in the local government areas of:

  • Balonne Shire Council;
  • Bulloo Shire Council;
  • Cherbourg Shire Council;
  • Goondiwindi Regional Council;
  • Maranoa Regional Council;
  • Murweh Shire Council;
  • Paroo Shire Council;
  • Quilpie Shire Council;
  • South Burnett Regional Council;
  • Southern Downs Regional Council;
  • Toowoomba Regional Council; and
  • Western Downs Regional Council.
